(REFLECTIONS ON 1 Kings 14:1-20)

Abijah, the son of King Jeroboam, was sick, and Jeroboam asked his wife to disguise herself so that no one would know her identity. He then sent her to Shiloh to inquire of Ahijah the prophet concerning their son.

Although Ahijah could not see because of his old age, the Lord revealed to him that the wife of Jeroboam was coming in disguise. Ahijah’s message from the Lord was one of judgment for Jeroboam, his house, and his kingdom.

As I was reading today’s Scripture, I thought to myself what Jeroboam was thinking? What in his mind made him think that a disguise would work against Ahijah, God’s prophet?

What can be hidden from the Lord?

Yes, the Lord sees all, knows all, is all, no disguise will work against the Lord of all creation. That the Lord revealed to Ahijah the identity of the one coming in disguise reveals his relationship and communion with God.

Nothing can be hidden from the Lord, but all can be hidden from us if we are not one in communion with Him. Disguises work only when we are apart from God, when we are living based on our own wisdom and understanding, and are not connected to the Father of Lights, the Giver of Life.

Brothers and sisters, the world works in secret and in disguise keeping the truth from our eyes, our hearts, and our lives. We live in lies, tricks, and deception, but in the Lord, when we are as the branches are one with the vine, our eyes will be open in the Spirit, and we too will not be deceived.
