(REFLECTIONS ON Zechariah 6:1-15)

Zechariah’s next vision was of four chariots led by horses going into the north country and the south country patrolling the earth. This patrol was not only to see what was happening and report back to the Lord, but to accomplish the work of the Lord.

The chariots that went to the north accomplished the work of the Lord, referring likely to Babylon, and appeased the Lord’s wrath in the land of the north.

Again the word of the Lord came to Zechariah telling him to take an offering of silver and gold from the exiles that returned to Jerusalem and to make a crown to be set on the head of Joshua the high priest.

This is where we should pause for a moment. A crown is for a king, but Joshua is the high priest and not the king. What is happening here is the role of the king and the high priest being brought together in unity as one.

There is then a reference to the Branch that will build the temple of the Lord,

13 “Yes, it is He (the Branch) who will build the temple of the Lord, and He who will bear the honor and sit and rule on His throne. Thus, He will be a priest on His throne, and the counsel of peace will be between the two offices.”

Peace will be between the two offices, that is the royal and the priestly offices. But who is this Branch? Who is this one who brings together what had previously been distinct? Yes, perhaps we already have the name in our hearts and minds, Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ is the High Priest and He is the King. Jesus Christ is the King, and He is our Lord. Jesus Christ is in Himself, through His death and resurrection, revealed to us by the Holy Spirit, all in all.

Does this blow our minds? In Christ, we have the King, the High Priest, the Lord, and God. For He is the Son of God, but yet we also know that He is God, Himself.

That is why in Matthew 28:17 when Jesus appeared to the disciples, “they worshiped Him.” How could they worship anyone else besides God and not be idolaters? Yes, they worshiped Jesus, but it was not idolatry, because Jesus is God. He is the King, High Priest, Lord & God!

In Christ we do not need any other. He is the answer, not just to the problems of life, but to life itself. Let us then move towards the cross, where Jesus bought our lives with His blood, and be united to God, through Christ, by the Holy Spirit.
