(REFLECTIONS ON 2 Kings 8:1-15)

One of the reasons we need to read the Bible is that it gives us a heavenly perspective on our earthly lives. These biblical accounts help us see God working, moving, and setting things in motion in a world that often seems out of control, chaotic, and unpredictable.

A heavenly perspective reminds us that there is order to the world because all creation is in God’s hands. In today’s Scripture, we first see God’s providence in the life of the Shunammite woman. God’s providence is His sovereign rule over all creation, governing every event in heaven and on earth according to His perfect will.

After Elisha told the Shunammite woman to leave the land because of the coming famine, she obeyed and lived among the Philistines for seven years. When she returned, she appealed to the king of Israel to restore her house and land.

At that very moment, Elisha’s servant Gehazi was recounting to the king how Elisha had raised the woman’s son from the dead. As Gehazi was telling the story, the woman and her son arrived, and the king immediately restored everything that belonged to her.

The world may call this a coincidence, but a heavenly perspective recognizes the hand of God. His providence was at work long before the woman ever stood before the king. God orchestrated the timing, the conversation, and the outcome, reminding us that He brings all things together according to His perfect wisdom and mercy.

The passage then shifts to Damascus, where the king of Aram sends Hazael to ask Elisha whether he will recover from his illness. Twice the same question is asked, “Will I recover from this sickness?” Yet we soon discover that it is the wrong question.

Elisha tells Hazael that the king’s illness itself is not fatal, but that the king will certainly die. The true danger is not the sickness but Hazael himself, who will murder the king and seize the throne.

Again, this may appear to be another unexpected turn of events, but it was not outside God’s sovereign plan. Years earlier, the Lord had told Elijah that Hazael would become king over Aram. Though that prophecy was not fulfilled immediately, God’s word did not fail. Even through the sinful actions of Hazael, God’s sovereign purposes continued to unfold.

A heavenly perspective reminds us that God’s plans will be accomplished even when people refuse to submit to Him. Our God remains faithful despite our unfaithfulness. His purposes stand despite human disobedience.

This should bring great comfort to our hearts. There is nothing we can do, and nothing the world can do, that can overturn God’s sovereign purposes. His plans, His will, and His providence are certain. Therefore, we can trust Him no matter what circumstances we face.

We are often faithless, doubtful, and unable to see beyond our limited perspective. But Scripture continually lifts our eyes above the chaos of this world and teaches us to see from a heavenly perspective. This teaches us to trust the God who is faithfully accomplishing His perfect will, even when everything around us seems to be falling apart.
